We've been farming and raising cattle in Sussex County for 4 generations.

Dating back to 1910, we've worked to build and maintain a reputation of quality and authenticity.

Nestled on 200 acres in Northwestern New Jersey, we are a four season farm working to meet your produce, garden and agritourism needs.

Ideal Farm and Garden Centre’s Sussex County roots date back over 100 years.

Jacob Tanis Sr. immigrated from Holland in the 1880’s settling in Paterson, NJ.  The hard working immigrant began what would become the world’s largest purebred Golden Guernsey herd by selling extra milk from the family’s dairy cow.

In 1910, Jacob Tanis Sr. began to turn that small operation into what would become a 3,400 acre farm with the world's largest herd of purebred Guernsey cattle right here in Northwestern New Jersey.  The award winning herd consisted of 2,000 cattle.

The Ideal name and reputation for quality expanded to include Aberdeen Angus in the 1960’s when Jabob Tanis Sr.’s son, Jacob Tanis Jr.,  moved the farm’s operations away from the dairy business and toward premium meat production.  Following in his father’s footsteps, the Ideal angus herd was renowned and well awarded.   This herd continues on at the farm today.

The third generation continued to build upon their farm heritage while expanding Ideal’s offerings.  Jan Tanis-Jorritsma and her husband, Ben Jorritsma opened a produce stand with the farm’s own fruits and vegetables in 1984.  Just like her grandfather, Jan and her husband quickly outgrew their first location and have been at the current route 15 location in Lafayette for over 30 years.

The garden center is open year round and has something special for every season from pumpkin picking and hayrides to farm fresh produce and Christmas trees and flowers.   Ideal is known for the Benny’s corn and tomatoes- the best in the county.
